16  HP Info Terminal / F.A.Q. / copying program files on: July 19, 2008, 08:20:44 PM
As far as I know I have to copy to another CPU.  Especially in the case where I research an program I don't have the option to retain a copy of the older.

So right now I have to copy to another CPU, do research, then copy back.  Forcing me to use up bandwidth.
17  Feedback Terminal / Suggestions / kernel / core utility versions on: July 19, 2008, 08:18:36 PM
In the running programmings list, I've noticed version 0.1 is listed for most kernel processes like Upload, delete file etc.

At some point will we have kernel upgrades?  It would be kind of neat to have an increased Upload or Download that does some compression on the fly, reducing total time etc.  Perhaps a verson 0.2 kernel would have version 0.2 firewall & password protect built in?  Like an upgrade to the OS on our gateway.

wont work.

for example, breaking a high elvel password protect can take anywhere from an hour + nowadays, whilst a 0.1 (newbie) hacker needs around 5-10 minutes.

Since i can run parallel breaks through really in-efficent means anyway, that means i would get more experience, despite the fact that in the current system (which said author has problems with) i have the advantage in teh first place.

I'm not following your example very well, what won't work?

It takes humans to develop software.

Therefore, research of software should primarily be factored by human involvement.

One hacker with a huge CPU farm should not be able to research faster than several hackers with the same (or even smaller) size farm.

I propose that researching the same software with parallel processes on one machine be removed, or if not removed then at least the effectiveness of additional parallel processes decreases in some fashion.

I don't think the software levels should be increased: doing so would make it harder for said new players to get admin access, which is necessary for doing anything.

I was assuming the new player / reformatted server software versions would keep pace with public server versions.

It's an add-on for Firefox you should be able to search for it there.

I think it takes a bit of work to create an actual overlay I've not done it myself.  But if you're playing this game you shouldn't be too intimidated by some scripting lol.

... most new players would tend towards the reset world, where they can grow unimpeded (for the most part), while the persistent server would ultimately stagnate.

I guess I would prefer the persistent world to stagnate and die rather than force new players into what is essentially a caste system in order to sustain the desires of the Gold Membership class.

Oh and I do like the partial resets that might make the permanent world more doable.  All public servers revision up in software.  Think of it as monthly maintenance by the physical support staff.  This would force the elites to have to re-infect the existing servers (in competition with any newcomers that have raised themselves up since the last partial reset).  Also for completely new players this would give them immediate access to newer versions without compromising their own IPs to get them from an elite hacker/crew.

It allows you to change and add to the layout and functionality of web pages on existing sites.

There's an overlay script for Astro Empires and it does various things including adding extra convenience buttons with related script that can autocalc things for you it can also log certain types of data specific to the game which it uses in various ways to enhance your experience.

Basically it can make things that you had to manually keep track or calcualte/tabulate very easier.  In some sense it is a hacker tool itself.  It doesn't give you the ability to cheat necessarily but definitely gives an advantage in that the existing web interface itself can be changed (all on the client side) and modified to increase your game play effectiveness.

Anyone thinking about doing this?  Huge potential.

I've been wondering about that.

Of course like Raistlin hints at having both would be great.

One world is the persistant world where yesterdays gains are always carried forward.  This world would kind of force new players to join existing crews in the long run.

Another world (or worlds) would be peridodically restarted when certain win / domination conditions are met.  The cool thing about these worlds is you could evolve the software in different ways, and even bring in new ideas that would be unworkable in the persistant world.  New players could have a real chance at dominating new worlds, unlike the persistant world.

Great game Sir Emi!  I'm still just figuring stuff out but it's got me hooked already!

My first take is that the high rollers soviet pride et al were able to spread rapidly onto 'virgin' territory.  They were the 'first wave'.

Now for a new person there is greater competition and already higher level wares in place which you have to work against so you can't spread as rapidly as they did.

Personally I like to play this as a learning experience so competition is fine but I would like to see a new player have the time to learn what various things do before getting completely owned by higher level players.  Also even only after a couple days playing I see a potential for the game turning into a lot of 'scurrying around repetitively covering your tracks'.  I would like to see the game evolve in a direction that de-emphasizes this as after you get the gist of log files it can become unfun fast.
30  HP Info Terminal / News & Updates / Re: Manage file transfers / Priority download / upload on: July 14, 2008, 07:02:21 PM
The download priority I thru V implementation is pretty unintuitive and it's hard to get multiple downloads balanced evenly.

Someone rethink it please!  At minimal there should be a "split evenly" quickbutton or an equivalent functionality.
