Title: Delete Servers
Post by: PlyPencil on November 09, 2008, 01:29:33 PM
Just a little function, I would like to see it possible to destroy your own server. We sell the parts back to the computer market as used so we only get 25% money back.

What do you think?

you'll probally want to put a time onto it because it is almost like format but more permenat. for example if your rich and your sever has rev on it you could delete it then buy a new one.

Oh noes!!!
Now Emi will never implement this (in this round)!
I think Emi wont do any updates that will somehow help maintaining this round.

Hmm so you have a server you want to sell? Well your in luck, My friend is interested in collecting used servers is willing to pay you 25% (+/- 15%). Unfortunately he will not pay you immediately but can pay 10% of the total every day.

I also caution you to wipe any software you have on there, I have heard that he does not maintain the servers and just keeps them running.

(Oh and btw your server has a 1 in 20 chance of becoming a NPC secret server)

It sounds good. When I think about the servers which were bought by misstake. 550 MHz CPU, 1 GB HDD, 32 MB RAM, 5 kbs BW. Not much of a secret server. And if the servers were upgraded it would be exploitable by all who can break all secret servers defenses because they would be able to create their own farms for only 20 000 HPD each. Much cheaper then buying one yourself. And IP change have never occured before and even if it will they should be limited to the 1 hour process as well and think about the sniffer you easily can install.

Perhaps the chance of becoming an NPC server increases the more you upgrade it. Of course, you'd want the deleted and switched server to change IP or else it might just become a way to avoid losing power points by infecting one's own server.

You dont lose power of infecting your own servers but you dont gain any power either. I dont want to go up in the ranks because I will only become a target and power rankings are failing already now.

Yes, that's what I mean. You'd gain that power if your infected servers suddenly became rogue NPC servers.

I didn't think you needed me to respond to that part. It's quite understandable that you'd want to keep a low profile. I too seek a low profile. Some, however, may want to improve their power ranking by converting private farms to NPC server farms. That's all I'm saying.

It's all speculation anyway, and if a deleted server converting to an NPC server undergoes an IP change, one would lose contact with the virii on the server anyway.

If they would do an instant IP change just install a sniffer before selling it and after that youd be able to use a breaker to get your virii back.

I've never had a sniffer maintain contact after an IP change. Could this be a bug?

I've sort of been ignoring this until now...  But if one deleted a virii farm, their power would go down, not up...  Viruses installed don't affect your power at all...  The hardware increases your power.  Losing the hardware would lower your power...

Also:
-VBs take a while to work, and if you can track through IP changes, you are abusing a bug...  So basically everybody would have an equal chance to VB.
-Upon converting to an NPC server, 3/4 of the virii on the server would generate missions...  This is the part, if any, that would be abusable...  The massive amount of cash one can suddenly make available through disinfect missions.

That's what I'm saying, Tiak. I was also under the impression that virii installed on other servers (non-owned) increase power rating, therefore, converting a private virii farm to an NPC server farm would effect power rating. I neglected to take into account, however, that the hardware factor to power rating would probably match if not exceed any power rating bonus due to installed virii. There also shouldn't be a way to track a server through IP change.

A deleted server which converted to an NPC server probably could generate a disinfect mission, but that would also depend on who it went to. I was assuming that it did not go to any of the four factions, but that may have been a bit naive and misleading--but that would preclude any possibility of generating disinfect missions and pretty well leave the server in limbo waiting for someone to purchase its IP. Deleted servers, therefore, should probably just vanish into the ether never to return.

As there are plenty of uses for unwanted servers, especially as private virii farms, this is not a critical issue, but it's fun to explore things, isn't it?  :16:
