Title: Vacation mode update
Post by: siremi on May 30, 2010, 03:05:04 PM
Vacation mode is used in case you want to take a vacation from HP but would like to be protected from attack during your absence.

Vacation mode can be activated in "Account options".

What does vacation mode do:
- when activated, it changes IP on all your personal servers. This means that any foreign virii will automatically lose connection.

- stops action points generation for you. You will no longer gain action points while in vacation mode.

- protects your personal gateways and programs / virii on it.
- no one is able to connect / bounce or remote attack your private servers.
- no one can use a remote malware attack to damage your private servers while you are in vacation mode.

- you are not able to access certain areas, gateway, IP database, etc. while in vacation mode.

- freezes tasks timers to the time you entered vacation. When you get out of vacation, you will have the exact same task times left as when you entered vacation.
- freezes all the virii timers. When you deactivate vacation mode, you will have the exact virii running timers as when you entered vacation.

What does vacation mode NOT protect:
- it does _not_ protect against Revelation attack.
- in Revelation Day, you will not be protected.
- virii installed on other servers then your own will not be protected.

Other vacation mode notes:
- some tasks in your gateway "Running Software" may expire if you take a too long vacation.
- if you activate vacation mode, you will have to wait 24 hours before you can get out of it. This may be increased later to 72 hours, once people get to know how it works.

Other patch notes:

- added connect / bounce buttons under IPs in "Software" page. Also added admin / server name info.
- added a filter for files in "Files / Programs", similar to the filter in "Running Software".

Cool, thanks Emi.

Question:  Originally you said all tasks (such as research would be canceled).  Is this not the case now?

Wait wait wait wait

I can change all the IPs of my servers instantaneously, for no cost, every 24 hours?!

I guess this is a big security update...72 hours forced AFK would be better, and less abused unless you genuinly were going away for 3 days

We'll see! Nice to see progress though ;)

Make

Admin: Yes
Dedicated Server

On one line so

Admin: Yes    Dedicated Server
So it doesnt sort of double block every virus and keeps it neat

Well I have a final solution... Do not look at it.

It's all good, I think it shows better now maybe...

Thank you.

Yeah, well since we can freeze all tasks to the point in time you entered the vacation mode, I don't see any problem.
The tasks will simply continue to where you left off, or if you take too long it will expire.

That's what I thought but maybe some of you wanted to test it, so I left 24 to start and then once you know how it works we can change it to 72 hours.

I agree with Alpha.  72 hours is probably better.

That way we it is used for vacation instead of a quick and dirty escape.    24 hours isn't much too loose worth of baron income, 72 much more :)

I'd agree if it were in frames/boxes correctly, some seem to be grouped into two and others not seemingly randomly?

 (sensitive data has been removed)

Also there still seems to be no organisation to it, can't you make it sort by IP, that would sort it  :)

ok, the "Software" page should be ordered by virtual IP now.

Ahhh that's much more easier to navigate, thanks Sir Emilian!

Still getting the double box fram thing though as shown in screenshot, don't know what that's all about... Maybe its firefox..

Tried in Chrome and it's fine, so yeah, my firefox is weird... Anyone else have it?

I only use firefox, Alpha, and I'm not seeing the issue you are talking about.

I also have a standard (non-widescreen) monitor.  Do you have widescreen? Maybe something with that?

Nope, is just a crappy 17inch LCD with no widescreen...

And if it was the monitor then it wouldnt be fine in chrome... Maybe mine's just weird...  :confused2:

I have both a normal monitor and a wide screen, and I've noticed strange things happen on the wide screen that I don't see on my normal one.  But I don't play hacker on the wide screen (other computer) so can't compare the two with this game.

Question: Does this protect your servers from IP dealer, or will people be able to buy it, but not connect?

They can still get the IP from the dealer, but they'll get a message saying this server is on vacation when trying to connect.

I guess that means we should change our IP as soon as we get back.

Another thought;
If i was to say, install a robber baron on a private gateway, then that player goes into vacation mode....

edit: Oh wait it changes your IPs  :14:  :13:
