Title: Research estimator improved
Post by: siremi on July 10, 2009, 04:24:36 PM

You can now change the version of the file when estimating research. Click on the blue version in the estimator table and input a target version.

Works like the manage transfers, you just change the version value in the version box and the estimator will try to calculate the number of hours needed to reach that version.

erm has this been tested at all emi ?

i enter 1.7 in the box and it changes it to 1.664393 ?

pretty much whatever i enter i get a few % less than what i asked for ?

and its still rounding the hours - and without the rounding being removed this will never work as requested.

Right, because of the rounding of the hours and the decay depending on hours the result version may be approximate but close to the target entered version. To get a better accurate version is the target gets lower, just add a few hours until you're fine with the result... it's not perfect  :2:

heres a sample test :-
starting with a v1.12 file

i would like a 1.5

i enter 1.5 - im offered a 1.46816 taking 64 hours

why was i not offered 70 hours @ v1.5008 or at the very least 69 hours @ v1.49536

Is it perhaps because of the diminishing returns factor?

The research estimator does have a disclaimer stating that it may be inaccurate below v10.

Anyway, it's a pretty nice update.

it dusn't take into account multiple tasks.

Nope, but there's no reason that the total hours can't be divided into multiple tasks. Research of 104 hours total can be divided into 2x52 hours or 4x26 hours or 8x13 for example. Can't have the game do all your thinking.  :16:

I could publish my own research calculator if anyone's interested.

Here is a screenshot:
(http://img36.imageshack.us/img36/8175/screenshotlrh.th.jpg) (http://img36.imageshack.us/i/screenshotlrh.jpg/)

It does more than just calculate the end version. It will also provide other usefull information to help decide how to set up your research.

It's a little win32 application. But if there's demand for it I could easily port it to gambas2 for the linux users.

I've been using it for a while now and I couldn't do without it anymore  :)

BTW..... the calculated end version is not 100% accurate (it seems to have the same small rounding errors as Emi's version) but I can assure that there will be very small difference.

PM me ingame if you want me to provide a link to the download location.
