Title: Format HDD
Post by: siremi on June 25, 2008, 01:21:05 PM
To format the gateway HDD does not take CPU / Memory anymore.

- After format, a backup disk from True Light will be used to restore the gateway files to the default basic 0.1 software your gateway comes equipped with.

This combined with the protection against malware (Can not damage hardware below default hardware you start with), counts as a protection for newbie hackers.

Nice touch.

It bothers me that new players are being discouraged from the game because they are being hacked to the point of not being able to function.  I think it will ruin the game in the long run.

I am hoping that there will be a PvP option and a PvNPC option.  I want to focus on hurting the evil mega corps.  I am not interested in hacking someone who is just trying to have some fun.

I hear that.  There is some asshat who somehow got me on his  ip list.  he just periodically  comes and deletes my files when im not around.  like my lvl .01 files.  WTF is that?

some people like to do that for kicks, even though it gives them no additional money or anything.

P.s, did you delete your logs/bounce your connection?

im guessing you broke into one of the beginning servers but left your ip there.

If I delete my logs using the 0.1 log undeleter, won't they just be recovered by some more advanced hacker? Seems pointless to even try. I can just hope that nobody cares enough to follow my bouncing trail.

Does formatting the HDD purge logs (maybe permanently)?

unfortunately even a newbie hacker can uncover your logs.

i suggest getting a higher level log deleter from one of the new servers coming online, or from a friend.

You could change your the logs instead of just delete them. Nobody tries to recover a log which isnt deleted.
Just please dont hack me with this strategy.

I do. ALready traced dozens of people in this game, an un-deleted log is not above my scrutiny.

Most people dont.

but it is an excellant noob detterant, just like the firewall with one hour research on it, most talented hackers will check even undeleted files, but the untalented ones wont, and in that case, you can choose someone who hacked you previosly, and replace your ip, with that person to get your target to hack your targeter, not that i've done this :19:

things which deter hackers:

large co-operations. Lots of logs to sift through

gateways with active defences. takes time, and if you plant modified logs, they might take the bait.

a bounce trail which goes in a loop.

(A big scary warning message saying follow at your peril or something similar xD)

Yeah, i did this with several people who broke in the beginning of the game into my gateway. This way people will remember that it's can turn out to be a bad thing to kick newbie in the beginning.

how would they remember? there is no way that they would know what caused them to keep getting attacked

Ok, have to visit each one again and leave messages in the logs :)

So far, I haven't been hacked (as far as I can tell): Most of what I've done is replace my IP on logs with the IPs of other servers (as if I Bounced through them), or with the IPs of hackers who left their IPs where I could find them.

Please don't see this as a challenge: I would really prefer losing the virii I've installed rather than losing programs on my home server.
