Title: Encryption/Decryption
Post by: AriaSteelfire on July 31, 2008, 08:40:19 AM
Does encryption actually do anything for someone anymore (other than preventing it from being run)?

I can use AV on an encrypted file with no Decryption software running on the gateway.  Did this get changed so you don't have to Decrypt a file before running AV?

Nope, afaik encryption has always been useless.

It should be useful in some places like:

- if someone uploaded a virus and is in process of activation and you encrypt it, he won't be able to activate it. (encrypt is slower then activate so he has to have to task for a longer time)

- useful when you want to stop encrypt a virus you just uploaded that doesn't have enough room to install

- useful on localhost if you expect to be hacked and don't want your viruses installed on you by the hacker, just encrypt the virus before going to sleep and then decrypt when you're ready to upload the next day

If you start the upload of a file, and in the meanwhile you encrypt it, when you complete the upload, what happed?

- You finish the upload and the file is encrypted

- You finish the upload and the file is not encrypted, have the same status when you start the upload.

- You cant finish the upload and loose all your time.

- Other: What?

It depends.

- If you click task complete on the encryption process and after that you complete the upload, you get an encrypted file.
- if you keep the encryption task in there you can upload at will and then when you are finished you can just click complete on the encrypt and you have the file encrypted. It's a good method to use a virus...

Except that encrypt does not affect Disinfection.   So if they are uploading a Virus then they would wait until after they install it to encrypt it but by then it is useless ;)

I was describing a method to keep your viruses safe from others that may hack you while offline.

Works like this:

- keep an encrypt active at all times while you are using / uploading the virus
- once done for the day and going offline, activate the encrypt process to lock the vir
- start decrypt process and log off

- coming back, complete the decrypt process to unlock the virus
- start encrypt process on vir
- upload / install again etc etc
- play play play
- done for the day, complete encrypt, start decrypt.

Hence and repeat. It requires an encryptor / decryptor (of higher or equal version then encrypt)

Ok fair enough.  Now here is the problem with that.  New Players have no chance.   I got a 0.5935 decrypt from a secret server and am sure there have been higher ones.  Now that decrypt takes 11,870 CPU to run.   That is going to be a mid range player most likely just on the CPU alone.  If you want to make it useful for the newer players then perhaps the resource usage of both the encrypt and decrypt should be relooked at?

Yeah, it does take a bit much for the decryptor, maybe it will be balanced a bit.

I'm suggesting 0.1 Encrypt / Decrypt at this time for newbies, mainly because if the vir file is encrypted and low version, most of the high players will not spend the AP to decrypt and install it...
