No one in 18 hours...

My guess is 8, 7, 3. Every other number in the decimal expansion of pi.

I hear you're being tough on EoD virus man. What're you using to determine who's an EoD member or not? The whole 'free distribution' thing makes it hard to tell based on software alone.

When you start "Vacation Mode", it takes 30 minutes for the server to shut down. While it is running, the only processes that can be running are Virii, Firewalls, and Password Protects.

How does that not act like a panic button? I like the delay idea, but how does your process restriction not act as a panic button? You're saying that downloads, deletes, and virii activations are not allowed once someone hits the vacation mode button. Raising activation time to an hour or more, allowing all processes to run during that period, then killing everything once the server shuts down.

2) All your virii stop aging.
3) All virii on your servers stop aging

Why? The vacationer's virii will still be disinfect/capture prone, so why not let the vacationer pick up the profits after a week or so if no one's gotten to them yet?  As for other people's virii on your server, I see why you want them to stop aging.

Quote
4) You cease to have any IP.
2) Each of your servers get a new IP

Free IP change should come with one or more of the following:
1.) Long cooldown (Think in the 2-4 week range)
2.) Long minimum vacation (Back to one week)
3.) Fee to activate vacation mode, rate based on number of servers owned.

It seems kinda complex; what's wrong with just changing IP's and not connecting after you leave? Odds that someone buys your IP are pretty slim, and 1k isn't that much these days. A few missions, max. And if you can't scrape together 1k, you are probably new enough that formatting won't hurt much, so if someone DOES hack you, formatting is a viable option to get them off your server.

Point taken, but this is something that should at least be thrown on the back burner if there are any major changes to any of the features you just described.

I'm actually not sure where I found the link to this game.  It was definitely from a banner ad, my guess would be from Pardus, though I played about 5 or 6 browser based games at the time I found HP. I've since trimmed it down to 2  laugh

Any chance we can get an inbox for sent messages as well?

Both owned virii and virii installed on your gateway should collect profits during vacation mode, but both cases would have to wait until vacation mode is over to collect.

Also, I'm not sure if you understand, vacation mode would stop all processes on your gateway, this includes internal processes such as research.

As for the minimum, I don't want it to be something that people use for reasons other than they won't have an internet connection for a couple days. My thinking is that if you're going to a place that doesn't have an internet connection, you're going to be there for a while anyway. Maybe 5 days, but any lower and I feel people will use it for other purposes. I'd like to hear other people's thoughts on this as well.

I like the idea, needs just two clarifications.

First off, using vacation mode would have to kill all processes on the machine, for obvious reasons.

Second, the minimum should be increased to somewhere in the area of a week to discourage abuse.

Then why not have power also take into account all files stored on your Gold FTP as well? The general opinion on the boards has been that power is not a good indicator of how powerful a player is. Given two equal power players, one may have many different programs, but at lower levels, while the other may be a specialist who hasn't gotten around to getting the stuff he/she barely uses.

You got it! (You got it!) eight-six-seven-five-three-oh-nai-eee-aaaii-nnee.  laugh

Hey, any song that inspires people to bad prank calls is okay in my book.

Ooookay, topic kill... *bump*

So uh, that may have been too obscure? I'll put a new one up, but if Zac would like to post his own since he provided an alternate solution he's free to do so. This one's just for laughs.

8, 6, 7, 5, x, y, z

And no, it's not 6, 4, 5.

What about having a flat percentage or a logarithmic function of your power added to the IP change cost?  As far as I understand, since nobody but siremi has the actual power calculation formula, power is based on what files you own, and what version those files are. If that's the case, then this raises the cost for the mid/high players (and even more so for the players who multi-specialize, which would promote specialization and grouping IMHO)

I also realize that power grows exponentially once you get to the top, anyone can see that just by looking at the power board.  So that would call either for a reworked power calculation where higher version numbers add less to power, or something like that, more in the morning from me.

*signed*

I also would like to see the timers coded to synch with the voting site timers. I'm not actually sure if they all reset at a fixed time every day, but I know a few state on the page that they reset at 12pm, but I forget which time zone.

Zac >> Legitimate answer, but not the one I was looking for either!  laugh
Maybe we should have a minimum on the number of terms to give in a sequence.

Expanding for the next three terms...

1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 7, 11, 15, 22, 30, x, y, z

And for a hint, the sequence does not have a recurrence relation to describe it, but does have a generating function.

149  Hacker Project Café / Game Room / Re: Pattern Battle!!! on: July 27, 2008, 04:13:06 PM
x=1113122110
y=311311222110
z=13211321322110

Reading it out digit by digit helps.  1

1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 7, 11, x, y, z

This sequence gives me nightmares sometimes, one of the harder classes I took with one of the professors I liked the most.
150  Feedback Terminal / Suggestions / Re: Hostile Defenses on: July 25, 2008, 08:15:21 PM
Perhaps a scan, or an IP trace, or some such thing. Something that means it isn't worth it to go poking at any player's IP you get, hoping you can get through their defenses. Perhaps an Surface Sniffer Demon, that detects the IP of people who crack the server, the same way a Sniffer Demon detects the IP of people who get Admin access; or a Surface IP Scan, which returns the FW Break and Password Break of the Cracking Server.

Both of those are already implemented in-game.  Your Surface Sniffer Daemon is either a.) Installing a Sniffer Daemon on yourself or b.) Manually tracking through your logs to find the origin IP.  Everytime you crack a server, you chance looking at their files and seeing that their Log UnDeleter is a higher version than your Deleter, in which case there's a good chance you'll be tracked down and get some payback.

As for the Surface IP Scan, why would you like to know the versions of their Bypass and Break?  I see no immediate advantage to knowing that information at the time of the crack.  If you want to know it, go find them and crack them.

Another problem is that half the actions you would have these automated processes do take AP to do with the current system.  Sure if you have no AP, the quick fix would to just have the countermeasure not go off, but what if you do have AP?  You spend that AP just because someone decided to attempt to crack your server, which is free.  So having one of these programs active would be a AP burner for YOU.  There's no limit on how many times you can click 'crack admin', and if multiple people do it at the same time it gets even worse.

After watching you post about all of this, I get the impression that you don't like PvP very much. All these suggestions would make PvP pretty nonexistant.  I think it would even discourage competition over completing missions.  These missions seem designed to be run with your FW/PP while you're offline.  I don't know about everyone else, but I like to have as much of my server's resources available while I'm disinfecting/cracking/doing missions, so I'm going to have those disabled while I'm running missions.
