16  Feedback Terminal / Suggestions / Re: Sugg. File similar to virus identifier for servers on: October 05, 2008, 09:50:25 AM
Changing name is more for organizational I think. It helps you keep track of serveral servers you have without having to memorize which is which.

Changing names of servers is a major bonus of Gold. Gold FTP is certainly very nice, but the name change thing is absolutely fantastic in the long run - most of my key programs are too big to fit on the Gold FTP but the name change option really helps to keep them safe in backup servers.

So... I disagree. Changing names is one of the great bonuses of Gold. Nerfing it... well I can see why but I for one happen to like anonymity.

it is usally faster to disinfect and start new virii than it is to capture, also, it would be way better to be using a bunch of v10's at that point...

Hrm... assuming v1 fileshares ... (which are the files which were mentioned)

Takes 120 AP to capture a virus...

Takes 360 AP (give or take) to install one...

A 100,000 bandwidth server could hold 200 such virii...

1200 hours to re-infect (just to generate the AP - its the AP generation which is the limiting factor in this case)

Only 400 hours to capture them... (+ a wee bit of time to actually run the virii capture but I don't think it will be 800 hours :p)

so... much MUCH faster to capture especially as I didn't factor in the AP needed to disinfect - or if you prefer the time needed to format (Though formatting a 6.4 TB drive must also take some time)

Ok... while I wish that was my server (daily revenue - 2.8 million give or take) there is ONE explanation as to why it might not have been full...

If someone else had hacked into the server and the user of the server got spooked (these things happen) then most likely it might have been reformatted... (though if it is v 1 fileshares it would probably have been much easier to simply leave them running and capture the processes... not sure if putting spyware would work if there was no one collecting the virii, never really played with spyware)

In which case you'd have a very juicy, very empty server. Just thinking about it makes me...  w00t2

However... it DOES seem too good to be true. Tip - don't put all your eggs in one basket (nor in one virii farm for that matter!)

Thanks, that clears it up.  17

Ohh!!!!

A chance to display my ignorance!

Can anyone enlighten me? What is OCD? (or to be more precise, what are you all referring to when you refer to OCD?)

Need to add the virus identifier to the list:

MB: 17.42
CPU: 30
MEM: 1150

Not sure about the official description though.

And thanks for ruining my question to Emi. He wont spend his time reading through all the posts but only read the latest one.

You're welcome.

Another 2 great awsome updates within 24h. I might forgive you for the rev virii after all.
I saw the pause button before you announced it. I also saw the account e #1 being active which Ive never seen before.
Just a little question; Why didnt you put the button next to 'Attempt to equally balance downloads'?

That looks like a simple usability design. If you are too tired to click on the right button, then you probably should get some sleep  7

Thanks, this really does help.

do you think we could have something similar for missions? I for instance tend to accept many missions which I know I will never complete (just to check for IPs). It would be great if I could just select and mass delete them too.

But Revelation needs to be installed to use the remote malware option? Doubt anyone would risk their server just to use a remote v0.1 malware attack, even if the target is using Revelation.

This is merely a suspicion but I have a nagging feeling that 0.1 revelation attack is likely to hurt a LOT more than a 0.1 malware attack.

Player has a point though Ebolla, though I disagree that v 0.706 will be the breaking point. 0.706 would be the theoretical limit but because you need to coordinate ten people you need a higher version to hit...

If there is a virus which takes longer to disinfect than the required time to stop Revelation there is NOTHING you can do to stop it, even if you have an AV.

Revelation virus 1.0 would be unstoppable provided you got 10 people to install it simultaneously (i.e. within the same day) - even if you do have the antivirus the AV routine would take too long to stop revelation from happening. The problem is that the AV does not work faster even if its version is much much higher than the version of the virus being disinfected.

quotes or it didn't happen. a link is fine too.

On another note, now that I read the quote, technically (and I do mean TECHNICALLY) Emi never says that this is the persistent server nor says that this is not the round server. Only because resets were never officially 100% announced everyone assumed that this was the persistent world. Just my 2c.

It's really a question of expectations.

I do have a recollection of having seen the posts which are discussed, but the perception and hence the expectation which I had for the first month while I played the game was that I was playing a persistent game on a persistent server.

That was my expectation, and I believe that it was the expectation of the vast majority of players, and it was an expectation which had been reinforced though perhaps not 100% confirmed by Sir Emi.

Another perception - this is a hacker game. Tomorrow it may be turned into a game about pokemons jumping around the place. Nowhere has it been stated that it will not be, and in fact it would not be against the TOS for this to happen. But our expectations is that this will be a hacker based game which will evolve in that sort of universe.

The expectation of persistence has been now dismissed, and as a direct consequence I'm less interested in the game today than I was a month ago but I am still here. We'll see how things evolve. What was or was not said at this point is largely (though not completely) irrelevant. We need to deal with the fact of the Faith/Revelation thing. We'll see how things go.

I'm also very interested in knowing whether if we nuke all the truelight servers it would stop Revelation from happening altogether though ;-)
29  HP Info Terminal / News & Updates / Re: Guide update - Revelation Day on: September 01, 2008, 03:45:54 AM
It's been made clear elsewhere.

After a reset the only thing which you will keep is your Gold FTP server upgrades, and the days left of gold account. All else is reset.
