this whole sentence taken from tutorial makes me wanna puke:
Quote
Viruses also known as virii, the latin plural are a means to get HPD different from missions.
1st: theres no such word "virii" in any language in the world, correct plural form in english is, unsurprisingly, "viruses"
2nd theres no plural for "virus" in latin
3rd the comma is redundant - you can place comma on both sides of an inclusion or no commas at all, but placing only one is incorrect (not sure if this rule applies in english too)
4th "are a means" omfg who wrote that? and how drunk he was then?

Definitions of hypercorrection on the Web:

    * In linguistics, hypercorrection is defined as usage of pronunciation or linguistic rule that many informed users of a language consider incorrect, but that the speaker or writer uses through misunderstanding of prescriptive rules, often combined with a desire to seem formal or educated.

Virus
The English plural of "virus" is "viruses"[1], not "viri" source: (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plural_of_virus#Virus)
"There simply is no known plural for this word in Classical Latin."

There does exist a Latin word virī, meaning "men" (the plural of vir, a second declension masculine noun), but it has a short i in the first syllable: the difference in vowel quantity is reflected in the pronunciation of the derived English words virile and viral.

Quote
virii pl.

   1. (proscribed) Plural form of virus.
   2. (computing, nonstandard) A superset of computer software composed of computer viruses, trojans, and worms.

[edit] Usage notes

    * The plural virii, though common, is often considered to be incorrect, and based on a misunderstanding of Latin. There is no example of a plural for the word virus in Latin.

[edit] Synonyms

    * (in computing): malware

Oh, by the way, welcome to "whatever."

If enough people want it moved back to "bugs" then it will be done, but I see to much lulz in the future.

i have no idea what is the point of ãłþħά-∆9's post, can someone enlighten me?

edit: as i play this game i see more and more typos, where is the right place to report them?
and i also noticed that person who wrote texts in this game obviously thinks that word "virii" is so uber kewl that he even uses it when singular form is needed :/

For someone who's picky about grammar, you sure seem to botch it yourself.

What do you mean what is the point in my post? What isn't the point?
It reiterates the fact that A. You were right and B. It's a non-standard form (incorrect but people still know what it means)

But yeah, pointless  14

You have an interesting idea of our community then.  laugh We have trolls and flamers, we just take it all as part of the game rather than get all serious business about it.

When you're right, you're right, what's the point in arguing?

I said viruses a few times when I first joined, was corrected by the community, didn't see a point in arguing about it, and accepted it. Virii kinda sounds all cool anyway.  16

I said virii a bunch and constantly got corrected, so I stopped.

I do prefer the word though :(
I like the way if you google wrong words it forwards you to the hyper correction definition:

Welcome norill,

We are all trolls and flamers here.  Nothing else.  In truth, I live under a bridge...   laugh

As for virii...    http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/virii

Yes, you are correct, virii is not the (politically) correct form.  But give it enough time and it will become the defacto standard usage.  Just like ain't ain't a word.... Some day Virii will become the proper way to spell viruses.

Plus it just plainly looks cooler...

I like virii because it is less keystrokes to type than viruses.

I live on top of the bridge that Brok lives under.
