Generally, one of the functions of a moderator is to lock threads that get derailed too badly. The way threads go around here, most would be locked because of derailment unless they're in whatever or general.

Wow, thats alot of different ways to prononce it....... but I think I got it now..... And this topic is in whatever, so it shouldn't be locked... Plus I wouldn't have any post if I had to stay on topic because most things that are on topic are dreadfully boring...

Don't be silly.
There's always some deviation from the OP, but complete derailment without any hope of return is something mods usually curtail. It's a lot of case-by-case judgment too. Deviation and even derailment may be relevant to the OP.

I always weigh in the usefulness of the derailment.

Hmmmm, I should start a thread about derailment when we get a mod, so that when they look at it they won't be able to tell it has been derailed.

Without thread derailment, the board would be nearly dead.

Something to take into account.
